When did you start skating?

I started skating in January 2015.

What got you on the Ice?

My boyfriend bought me a learn to skate course for Christmas.  I’d loved watching ice skating and always said I wanted to learn one day but never had the confidence to start.  I still don’t think I would have gone if he hadn’t encouraged me.

What is it that you love about ice skating so much?

I love being able to get on the ice and have an escape from everyday life.  I love learning something completely new and love the feeling I get when I feel myself improving on things I’ve spent a long time practicing.   As well as being great exercise, it’s also where I’ve made amazing friends and been introduced to so many exciting opportunities including synchronised ice skating (which I am now obsessed with!!)

What is the biggest challenge you have faced as an adult skater?

The biggest challenge is fitting skating around my life.  I work full time whilst skating in two synchro teams and have private coaching which makes little time for anything else.  Despite this I can’t think of anything else I would rather be doing!  Luckily I also have very supportive friends & family who are really glad I have found a hobby I love and that makes me happy (as well as thinking I’m absolutely mad).

Do you have any words of encouragement for other adults considering taking up Ice Skating?

Before I started skating I worried it was too late for me to start as I was too old, and while it might be true that it would have been easier to have started when I was younger, I’ve been able to do things I never even thought I would be able to do – I even landed my  Axel after 3 years of skating!   Skating has taught me that if you are determined and have a patient and encouraging coach you can achieve your goals (and then some!) no matter what age you are!
